As I write this message, I have the Judiciary Hearing on in the background discussing the sexual assault that Christine Blasey Ford claims she experienced as a young woman. While I don’t want to talk about the legitimacy of her claims, it brings attention to the level of sexual assault that happens in this country.
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center estimates that one in five women and 1 in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives. Perhaps even more harrowing is that one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually assaulted before they turn 18 years old. We have a serious problem of respecting people’s bodies. It is critical that we have these conversations with our young people so that these rapes and sexual assaults end. Most of us have grandchildren, nieces, nephews, children, etc. that we have influence over; I strongly encourage you to engage in these uncomfortable conversations.
I talk about the light of Christ. There is nothing that will diminish that light more than a sexual assault. Jesus wants each of us to be the best people we can become; we can only do that if we respect one another. If you would like to talk to me about any of this, please don’t hesitate to schedule a time to meet.
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Ken Mantler
